On Monday morning, it was reported that Washington was bringing in veteran S Darnell Savage Jr. for a visit. Obviously, they were already set on bringing in the 7th year safety to the team as within a couple of hours it was reported that Washington had signed him to a one-year contract. This comes after the news that starting safety Will Harris suffered a broken fibula in the week three win against the Las Vegas Raiders. The former Maryland Terrapin was a 1st round pick by Green Bay back in 2019 and spent his first five seasons with the Packers and the next two with the Jaguars. Savage has 11 career interceptions including two that he returned for touchdowns. The most notable was in the 2023 Wild Card round when he picked off Dak Prescott and took it back 64 yards for the score.

The Washington Commanders safeties now consist of Quan Martin, Jeremy Reaves, Percy Butler, and Darnell Savage. Martin and Reaves are expected to be the starters until Will Harris returns from IR. Martin has been building a solid career over the past couple of seasons and truly emerged towards the end of 2024. Jeremy Reaves is one four players on the team to play for all three team names and has been a special teams ace for Washington since he arrived in 2019. The fan favorite will look to finally solidify his spot in the starting lineup now that Harris is out for the next four games at minimum.

Overall, this is a great depth signing for the Commanders in a secondary room that is dropping like flies. Two players have now been placed on the short-term IR, so it's time for the bottom of the roster to step up once again for Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr.
