September 17th, 2025 was a momentous day in the history the Washington Commanders when the Washington D.C. City Council approved a $3.7 billion deal to build a new stadium and developmental area around the RFK Stadium site. The first vote on the new stadium deal took place six weeks ago and passed at a 9-3 margin. The second vote taking place on 9/17 didn’t take place without its fair share of drama from the council members. Council chairman Phil Mendelson announced early Wednesday morning, that there had been several amendments submitted from multiple council members that jeopardized the passing of the deal.

Team president Mark Clouse said that there were proposed amendments from the last 24 hours that had “a list of unworkable and impractical new last-minute demands by Councilmembers.” Fortunately, for the members of the ownership group in Washingtons, Commanders fans, and District of Columbia citizens alike; the vote held on 9/17/2025 passed at an 11-2 margin. There is one more step before the RFK stadium rebuild can officially begin which lies in the hands of the United States Congress. Once the stadium proposal has passed its final step, the construction timeline can officially begin on the housing, shopping district, and, of course, the stadium itself.
